Sharad Purnima 2026 Vrat Katha: Story, Puja Vidhi & Benefits

Sharad Purnima is one of the most spiritually significant full moon nights in the Hindu calendar. Celebrated on Ashwin Shukla Purnima, the festival is associated with Chandra Dev, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Krishna. Devotees observe fasting, perform puja, listen to the traditional Sharad Purnima Vrat Katha and spend the evening in prayer under the full moon.

In 2026, Sharad Purnima will be observed on Sunday, October 25. Purnima Tithi begins at approximately 11:55 AM on October 25 and ends at 9:41 AM on October 26.

One of the most important traditions associated with this sacred occasion is listening to or reading the Sharad Purnima Vrat Katha. The best-known traditional legend tells the story of two sisters and highlights the importance of devotion, discipline and completing a spiritual observance sincerely.

What Is Sharad Purnima Vrat?

Sharad Purnima Vrat is a devotional fast traditionally observed on the full moon day of the Ashwin month.

Depending on regional and family customs, devotees may worship Chandra Dev, Goddess Lakshmi or Lord Krishna. Sharad Purnima is also known as Kojagara or Kojagari Purnima in several regions, where Lakshmi worship and night vigil are important traditions.

The vrat is not simply about avoiding food. Its deeper purpose is discipline, purity, prayer and conscious devotion.

Many devotees spend the day chanting mantras, reading sacred stories and preparing offerings before worshipping the Moon in the evening.

Sharad Purnima 2026 Vrat Katha

The traditional Sharad Purnima Vrat Katha revolves around two sisters who observed Purnima fasts differently.

According to the legend, there once lived a moneylender who had two daughters. Both daughters used to observe the Purnima fast, but there was an important difference in the way they followed it.

The elder sister was deeply devoted. She observed the fast sincerely and completed all the required rituals before breaking it. In the evening, she offered Arghya to Chandra Dev and completed her vrat only after the worship was properly concluded.

The younger sister, however, did not observe the vrat with the same seriousness. Although she would begin fasting, she often broke her fast prematurely and did not follow the complete ritual with devotion.

As time passed, both sisters grew up and were married.

The elder sister was blessed with healthy children. The younger sister, however, suffered repeatedly because her children did not survive after birth.

Filled with grief, the younger sister approached a saint and explained her suffering.

The saint told her that she had been observing the Purnima fast without true devotion and had repeatedly broken the vrat before completing it. He advised her to observe the next Sharad Purnima fast properly, with sincerity, discipline and complete faith.

Realising her mistake, the younger sister followed the saint's advice.

She observed the next Sharad Purnima fast with full devotion and completed all the prescribed rituals.

Later, she gave birth again. However, according to the traditional legend, the child once again died soon after birth.

The younger sister then remembered that her elder sister had faithfully observed the Purnima vrat for years and was believed to have received the blessings of Chandra Dev.

She placed the child on a small bed, covered the body and invited her elder sister to visit.

When the elder sister came and was about to sit on the bed, part of her clothing touched the child. According to the vrat katha, the child immediately came back to life and began crying.

The elder sister was shocked.

The younger sister then explained what had happened and said she believed that her elder sister's devotion and the blessings received through faithfully observing Purnima Vrat had brought the child back to life.

The traditional story concludes by emphasising the importance of performing Sharad Purnima Vrat sincerely and completing the religious observance with faith and discipline.

What Does the Sharad Purnima Vrat Katha Teach?

The story should be understood primarily as a traditional religious legend, rather than a literal medical or historical claim.

Its central spiritual message concerns sincerity.

The elder sister follows the vrat with devotion and discipline, while the younger sister initially treats the ritual casually.

The contrast reminds devotees that spiritual practices gain meaning when they are performed consciously rather than mechanically.

The katha also highlights qualities such as patience, faith, self-control and respect for one's commitments.

In this sense, the Sharad Purnima Vrat Katha is not merely a miraculous story—it is also a lesson about bringing seriousness and awareness into spiritual practice.

Sharad Purnima 2026 Puja Vidhi

Devotees observing the vrat can follow a simple Sharad Purnima puja vidhi according to their family tradition.

Begin the day by waking early, taking a bath and cleaning the puja area.

Wear clean clothes and make a sankalp, or intention, to observe the vrat with devotion.

Place an image or idol of the deity worshipped in your tradition. Depending on the family, this may be Lord Krishna, Goddess Lakshmi or Chandra Dev.

Light a diya and incense.

Offer flowers, fruits, sweets and other sattvic items.

Devotees may chant prayers or mantras and read or listen to the Sharad Purnima Vrat Katha.

In the evening, after moonrise, worship Chandra Dev.

Many families offer water or Arghya to the Moon.

Rice kheer is traditionally prepared and placed under moonlight before being consumed as prasad.

Conclude the worship with Aarti and prayer.

How to Observe Sharad Purnima Vrat

There is no single fasting method followed by every family.

Some devotees observe a complete fast during the day.

Others consume fruits, milk or simple sattvic food.

The important aspect traditionally emphasised in the vrat is discipline and sincerity.

If following a family-specific ritual, devotees should continue with the customs they have traditionally practised.

Those who are elderly, pregnant, managing a medical condition or taking regular medication should not undertake restrictive fasting without appropriate health guidance.

Spiritual observance should not come at the cost of personal well-being.

Sharad Purnima Kheer Ritual

One of the most famous Sharad Purnima traditions is the preparation of kheer.

Rice kheer made from milk, rice and sugar is prepared during the evening and traditionally placed under the moonlight.

According to religious belief, Sharad Purnima moonlight has special spiritual significance.

The kheer is therefore kept where moonlight can fall upon it and later consumed as prasad.

For hygiene, the vessel should remain safely covered so that insects, dust or contaminants cannot enter the food.

This custom should be viewed as a spiritual and cultural tradition rather than as a scientifically proven medical treatment.

Why Is the Moon Worshipped on Sharad Purnima?

Sharad Purnima is associated with the autumn full moon.

Traditional Hindu belief describes the Moon on this night as shining with all sixteen Kalas or phases, symbolising fullness and completeness.

Chandra Dev is therefore worshipped through prayers and Arghya.

The cool moonlight is also symbolically associated with peace, serenity and emotional balance.

For devotees, looking at the full moon during Sharad Purnima can become a moment of reflection and gratitude.

Connection Between Sharad Purnima and Lord Krishna

Sharad Purnima is especially significant in Vaishnav traditions.

The night is associated with Lord Krishna's divine Maha Raas with the gopis of Vrindavan.

Because of this tradition, Sharad Purnima is also known as Raas Purnima in certain regions.

Temples in Mathura, Vrindavan and the wider Braj region may celebrate the night with bhajans, kirtans and special Radha-Krishna worship.

The story represents divine love and the devotee's complete surrender to the divine.
