Guru Purnima is a festival of gratitude towards the Guru. A Guru may be a spiritual master, schoolteacher, parent, elder, mentor or any person whose wisdom has guided us towards a better life.
“Purnima” means the full-moon day. The full moon represents light, clarity and completeness. Similarly, the Guru brings understanding into areas of life clouded by fear, doubt and ignorance.
In the spiritual tradition, a Guru does more than provide information. A true Guru helps the disciple understand the self, recognise unhelpful patterns and move towards truth through direct experience.
Guru Purnima therefore celebrates both the external guide who shows the path and the awakening of inner wisdom that allows a seeker to walk that path consciously.

Why Is Guru Purnima Called Vyasa Purnima?
Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima because the day honours Maharishi Veda Vyasa. He is traditionally revered for his contribution to India’s spiritual and literary heritage and is closely associated with the Mahabharata and the preservation of Vedic knowledge.
Many devotees perform Vyasa Puja, read sacred texts or listen to spiritual discourses on this day. The observance expresses gratitude not only to one’s personal Guru but also to the spiritual lineage through which wisdom has been preserved and passed from one generation to another. Significance of Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is more than a ceremonial festival. Its deeper purpose is to examine whether the teachings we have received are being applied in our daily lives.

Start Your Journey Today!Gratitude for Guidance
The day encourages us to remember those who corrected, encouraged and supported us. Gratitude softens the ego’s tendency to believe that every achievement was accomplished alone.
It helps us recognise the role of teachers, parents, mentors and spiritual guides in shaping our thoughts, values and decisions.
Renewal of Spiritual Commitment
For a spiritual seeker, Guru Purnima is an opportunity to renew commitment to the spiritual path.
The disciple reflects on the Guru’s teachings and asks whether those teachings are being followed sincerely. Instead of merely expressing devotion through words, the seeker resolves to practise awareness, discipline and compassion.
Movement from Ignorance to Awareness
The Guru helps the seeker recognise the difference between temporary thoughts, emotions and deeper consciousness.
This movement from unconscious living to awareness is central to spiritual transformation. The Guru does not simply provide answers but helps the seeker develop the clarity needed to discover truth directly.
Humility and Receptivity
Knowledge can be received only when the learner is willing to listen.
Bowing before the Guru symbolises humility, openness and respect for wisdom. It reminds the disciple to set aside pride, assumptions and resistance while receiving guidance.
Seva and Selfless Action
Many devotees perform seva on Guru Purnima.
Serving without seeking recognition converts devotion into practical action. It helps reduce attachment to the ego and encourages the disciple to contribute to the well-being of others.

You may chant a mantra given by your Guru.
Those who have not received a specific mantra may recite a traditional Guru prayer, practise silent remembrance or repeat the name of their Guru with devotion.

Gurur Devo Maheshwarah
Guruh Sakshat Param Brahma
Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah

Begin the morning with gratitude rather than immediately checking your phone. Write down the names of people whose guidance has changed your life and contact at least one of them.
